Concussion Awareness & Player Safety
At Saanich Wolverines Football, the health and safety of our athletes is our top priority. Football Canada and other Canadian sport organizations recognize that, like many sports, football carries some risk of injury (including concussion) and they also emphasize that these risks can be effectively managed through education, proper equipment, rule enforcement, and a strong culture of safety.
Our program follows Football Canada’s concussion awareness and return-to-play guidelines, which are based on current Canadian sport and medical best practices. Coaches, trainers and managers receive training on recognizing the signs and symptoms of concussion, and players are encouraged to report how they are feeling without fear of penalty or pressure to “play through” an injury.
Protective equipment also plays an important role in reducing risk. All players are required to wear properly fitted, CSA-approved helmets and protective gear, which are designed to absorb and distribute impact forces. While no helmet can prevent all concussions, research supported by Football Canada shows that modern equipment, combined with correct fitting and maintenance, significantly improves player safety.
Equally important is how the game is taught and played. Our coaches emphasize safe tackling techniques, proper body positioning, and respect for the rules of the game. Age-appropriate drills and progressive skill development are used to help reduce unnecessary contact while still allowing players to build confidence, strength, and teamwork.
Football provides many well-documented benefits for youth, including physical fitness, coordination, resilience, leadership, and a strong sense of belonging. By following national safety standards and fostering open communication between coaches, parents, and athletes, the Saanich Wolverines are committed to creating a positive environment where players can enjoy the sport while being well protected.
We encourage parents to review Football Canada’s concussion resources and to speak with our coaching staff at any time if they have questions or concerns. Working together, we can ensure that football remains a safe, fun, and rewarding experience for all of our athletes.
